THOROUGHBRED BROODMARE RESCUE December 2007 A humane crisis is taking place because many perfectly healthy Thoroughbred broodmares that are in-foal are suddenly declining in market value due to poor yearling sales. We have already rescued several pregnant mares from public auctions this year where they were consigned with no minimum, and more will surely follow as winter begins. You may wonder how the lovely mares you see on our website could possibly become victims of slaughter. Yet this is the face of slaughter in America, where pregnant mares, innocent foals, and all manner of usable horses are victimized by killer buyers through public auctions. Although the court- mandated closing of American horse slaughter plants is a welcome victory for the horses, in reality, the lack of federal protection at our borders means that they are now being shipped to Mexico where their death is rendered even more cruelly. Let us be clear, the fiction of vast numbers of “unwanted horses” that is incessantly repeated among proponents of keeping horse slaughter legal in the US is a smoke screen. By constantly alluding to vast numbers of “unwanted horses” the commercial horse breeding industry cloaks indifference to the equine suffering that inevitably occurs when far too many horses are produced than the market can absorb. This is the cause of the suffering that affects all breeds in our country. Everyone who reads this appeal has a Congressman and a U.S Senator. Please write and call, and call again, until HR 503 and SB 311 are out of committee and on to the floor of both houses. Only when the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act is law can we close our borders to foreign horsemeat dealers and prevent them from victimizing any more of America’s horses. Until the law provides protection we continue to rescue the victims. View adoptable broodmares here. Please contact Tranquility Farm if you are interested in sponsoring or adopting a rescued Thoroughbred broodmare, or if you can assist us in placing them in your community. Tranquility Farm will offer the mares we rescue at an adoption fee which is cost-based in order to recycle our fund for the rescue of other mares.
