Thoroughbred Charities of
America Board Approves $1,564,400 in Grants for 2007
June 7, 2007
At it's annual board meeting
on June 2, 2007, Thoroughbred Charities of America (“TCA”)
approved grants of $1,564,400 to 149 non-profits in the
charitable work of Thoroughbred Rescue, Research, Backstretch,
Education and Therapeutic Riding, in 28 states (Tranquility Farm
received $25,000).
With an eye toward the future, $100,000 was added to
the TCA endowment fund, to ensure a steady grant flow. An
additional $75,000 fund was retained for emergency grants toward
those suffering from hurricane and fire damage, drought and
various equine crises.
TCA, the “ United Way ” of the Thoroughbred industry,
raises funds primarily from it's stallion season and art auction
each year, which this year is scheduled for Friday, Nov. 30,
2007 at Keeneland Entertainment Center.
“The strong support from the industry in the donation
and purchase of the stallion seasons, has enabled TCA to make
grants of more than $15,000,000 to nearly 200 organizations in
the Thoroughbred industry over the past 17 years” said Herb
Moelis, President of TCA. |

Many Injured Horses Still Sent to Slaughterhouses
By LESLIE
YERANSIAN
Tens of thousands of
thoroughbred horses are sent to slaughterhouses each year after
suffering from injuries far less serious than Barbaro's
fractured ankle, according to the Humane Society.
About 15
percent of the slaughtered horses are thoroughbreds, and many
end up as meat for human consumption in other countries,
including France, Belgium, Holland, Japan and Italy.

A place to go after the
applause
by
Erin Spry
The career of
a racehorse is as hard
and fast as the competitions they sprint in. By the time a
horse’s age climbs to the double digits, its peak racing years
are in the past. But these born-to-run athletes, with 20 or so
years left to catch their breath, are far from purposeless.

The Pensioner
by John Russell
The Thoroughbred
industry can take credit for its many charitable contributions,
by some accounts donating more money to more diverse causes than
any other sport in this country. But despite the generosity of
the sport at large, the funds directed toward the survival,
care, and rehabilitation of most of the horses that are no
longer wanted on the racetrack or in the breeding shed are
relatively small. read
