In September of 2000 ReRun (KY) and Thoroughbred Charities of America co-sponsored the first summit of independent non-profit Thoroughbred Retirement providers and racing industry representatives in Lexington, KY. The purpose of this conference was to gather information and create criteria for legally constituted programs that could guarantee the wise use of industry and philanthropic investment in the care of retired racehorses. Tranquility Farm was privileged to participate in the discussions that led to the establishment of the national standards that have since been refined and adapted to facilitate the accreditation process which serves the two largest national fundraising organizations for Thoroughbred retirement programs; Thoroughbred Charities of America, and Blue Horse Charities. To maintain our accreditation with these organizations Tranquility Farm annually submits for review our list of horses, a record of adoptions, a veterinary inspection certificate, and all financial records for the previous year. Accreditation standards and inspections benefit both the racing industry and the public. They provide assurance to owners wishing to donate a horse that the program they are considering will meet high standards of care, and they also direct potential adopters to organizations with a good track record of successful adoptions. With accreditation standards now in place, supporters of racing charities can be guaranteed that their donations will be appropriately used to benefit the horses.
